How to plan Paris museum visits on Monday and Tuesday
The Louvre closes on Tuesday and Orsay on Monday. Plan a short Paris trip around the right museum days before committing to tickets with friends.

For a Paris trip covering Monday and Tuesday, put the Louvre on Monday and the Musée d'Orsay on Tuesday if you want to visit both. Their regular closure days run the other way round: the Louvre closes on Tuesdays; Orsay closes on Mondays. Check your actual dates for holiday closures and exceptional changes before buying tickets.
Give Triplore your Paris dates, companions and budget, with both museums as must-dos and the pace your friends want. It generates a complete, well-researched itinerary within 5 minutes. Then verify the museum days against the official visitor pages and request chat edits around confirmed entry times.
Which Paris museum closes on which day?
A friend saying "we'll save the museums for Monday" has left an important detail unresolved. These two major collections have different weekly schedules.
| Museum | Regular Monday schedule | Regular Tuesday schedule | What this changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Louvre | Open, normally 9am–6pm | Closed | Keep a Monday visit if Tuesday is your only other full day. |
| Musée d'Orsay | Closed | Open, normally 9.30am–6pm | Use Tuesday, or an eligible earlier day if you leave on Monday. |
The Louvre's official hours page also lists closure on 1 January, 1 May and 25 December. The Musée d'Orsay's visitor page lists Monday closure, plus 1 May and 25 December. These regular patterns do not override exceptional closures or access notices.
For four friends arriving on Sunday evening, that makes Monday's choice consequential. Putting Orsay there and assuming the Louvre can move to Tuesday leaves both visits on closed days. Add the closure constraints to your Triplore chat request and review the revised order before anyone pays.
Give Sunday-to-Tuesday trips a different order from Saturday-to-Monday trips
For a Sunday evening arrival and Tuesday evening departure, a workable starting structure is a relaxed arrival meal, the Louvre on Monday, and Orsay on Tuesday if the departure leaves enough time. Keep the rest of each museum day modest so friends can eat properly and choose how long to stay in the collection.
Ask Triplore for the full trip with those museum days specified. Include the time you need to leave for your journey home. A Tuesday morning visit only belongs in the plan if you can finish without watching the clock throughout the galleries.
A Saturday-to-Monday break needs another sequence. Place Orsay on Saturday or Sunday, and consider the Louvre on Monday only if departure allows it. If Monday is mostly checkout and travel, put your preferred museum earlier and decide whether the second collection deserves space at all.
Our weekend itinerary guide explains why two nights away can leave much less than two sightseeing days. Use the hours you actually have when requesting the generated plan, including late arrivals and time for bags.
Decide whether everyone wants both collections
The calendar can permit two museums while the group only wants one. Two friends may want a long Louvre visit; the others may prefer one shared gallery session followed by time outside. Booking everyone into successive museum days settles that disagreement through spending before anyone has discussed it.
In an April 2025 Reddit question about visiting both collections in one day, the proposed visit fell on a Monday or Tuesday. The question captures a specific planning trap: debating how much art fits into a day before checking whether the doors will be open. Official museum information should settle the closure question; your friends still need to settle their appetite for the visits.
Share the generated Triplore itinerary and ask friends to comment on the museum blocks. Someone who wants less gallery time can say so against the actual day. Request a shorter shared visit and optional extra time for enthusiasts, with a clear meal or meeting point afterwards.
That gives the keenest visitor room to stay without making everyone else wait by an exit. It also prevents a smaller art preference from becoming an argument about who is "doing Paris properly".
Confirm admission before moving meals around a ticket
The Louvre recommends time-slot bookings, including for visitors entitled to free admission. Its official page says last entry is one hour before closing and rooms begin clearing 30 minutes before closing. A 6pm closing time therefore does not support a plan to arrive at 5.30pm for a quick visit.
For friends arriving separately on Monday, choose a slot that the last arrival can realistically reach. Verify that slot with the museum, then tell Triplore the confirmed time and request an edit that leaves margin beforehand. Avoid fixing a tight lunch reservation immediately before entry just to make the day look full.
At Orsay, check the rules for your actual ticket or admission entitlement. Its official admission page distinguishes timed-ticket access from other entry arrangements and sets out reservation rules for the first Sunday of the month. Friends using different passes or concessions should each confirm what applies to them.
Triplore generates and reshapes the itinerary; it does not reserve museum admission or guarantee live ticket availability. Use the confirmed booking as an input to the next edit. Our guide to editing an AI travel itinerary shows how to change one part while preserving the plans the group has already agreed.
Keep a rainy-day alternative that is open on your travel dates
For an autumn or winter break, friends can agree to a long outdoor afternoon and then want an indoor replacement when the forecast changes. Orsay cannot be the Monday fallback under its regular schedule. Moving the Louvre to Tuesday creates the same problem in reverse.
Ask Triplore for a weather alternative on the date you need it, keeping any confirmed museum ticket fixed. Check the suggested venue's own opening information before settling the change. If your friends have already had enough galleries, request a café break and a shorter walk instead of spending more on another collection.
If the revised itinerary feels too busy, return to an original version or request a narrower change. For example: "Keep Monday's Louvre ticket and dinner unchanged. Replace the long afternoon walk with a slower indoor option, allowing time to get there."
Start your Paris itinerary with the actual travel dates and the museum your friends most want to see. Generate the full trip in Triplore, then confirm that each ticketed visit falls on an eligible day before purchasing admission.
