How to plan a 2-day Bilbao itinerary with friends

Spend two days in Bilbao around the Guggenheim, Casco Viejo and pintxos, with a Monday opening check and a clear decision about San Sebastián.

Planning a shared two-day Bilbao itinerary

For two days in Bilbao, spend one around the Guggenheim and riverside, then give Casco Viejo a slower day with pintxos around Plaza Nueva. Keep San Sebastián for a longer trip unless the group deliberately wants to give up a Bilbao day. Check the museum calendar first if your stay includes Monday.

Give Triplore your Bilbao dates, companions and budget, including how much gallery time everyone wants. It generates a complete, researched itinerary within 5 minutes. Friends can comment on the first plan before a museum booking decides the pace for people who came mainly for the food.

Day one: give the Guggenheim enough time to matter

Start with the Guggenheim, then leave the riverside as the flexible part of the afternoon. Spain's official two-day Bilbao guide places the museum, Zubizuri bridge and the Abandoibarra area within its modern-city route. The building and outdoor artworks give architecture enthusiasts something to enjoy even when their friends want longer inside.

For four friends arriving on Friday evening, a Saturday museum visit followed by lunch leaves room to walk afterwards. Ask Triplore for that sequence rather than a morning full of stops before the main visit. If two people prefer to skip the galleries, agree where to meet for lunch and keep that decision in the itinerary comments.

The museum's official visitor page, checked on 20 October 2026, lists regular opening from Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 7pm, with selected Monday exceptions. It also states that issued tickets are non-refundable. Confirm the calendar and ticket conditions for your actual visit before buying; Triplore generates the plan but does not reserve admission.

After lunch, choose how far the group wants to walk along the river. The national tourism route continues towards Euskalduna and then into the Ensanche area. You do not need to complete every stop. A chat edit such as “Keep the Guggenheim, shorten the afternoon walk and leave a proper break before dinner” gives the revised day a clear constraint.

Day two: leave time to eat in Casco Viejo

Keep the second day around the old town, including the Seven Streets, La Ribera Market and Plaza Nueva. Spain's tourism guide identifies these as a connected part of its traditional Bilbao route, with pintxos bars around the square. This gives friends a day with fewer fixed commitments after the museum visit.

A group that wants to sample several places needs room between stops. Tell Triplore to make food the afternoon focus and avoid adding another major museum simply because there is a gap. Check individual venues' current opening hours before relying on a particular market stall or bar.

Settle the meal format in comments before the day. Two friends wanting a seated lunch and two expecting to keep moving between bars have different plans for the same hours. Once they agree, ask for a chat edit that reshapes lunch and the surrounding walk together. Our guide to travelling with different travel styles covers how to preserve shared time while allowing a split.

For an extra viewpoint, consider Artxanda only if conditions suit. Biscay's official tourism route describes the funicular and the panorama over Bilbao. For an autumn or winter break, ask Triplore to keep a version without the viewpoint so poor visibility does not leave a hole in the day. Confirm the service details separately before heading there.

Change the day order for a Sunday–Monday break

A Sunday arrival followed by a full Monday needs a different order from a conventional weekend. If the Guggenheim is central to the trip, put it on Sunday while keeping enough time between arrival and entry. Use Monday for the old-town route, checking the individual places you want to enter.

As checked in October 2026, the museum lists 7 and 28 December among its selected open Mondays. Those exceptions do not make every winter Monday an opening day, and they do not establish the calendar for a later year.

Your usable daysSuggested structureDecision before paying
Saturday and SundayGuggenheim and riverside, then Casco ViejoWhether everyone wants museum admission
Sunday and MondayMuseum on Sunday if arrival allows; old town on MondayWhether there is enough arrival margin
Monday and TuesdayOld town first; museum on TuesdayWhether departure leaves time for the galleries
Two partial daysOne main visit plus a shorter neighbourhood routeWhich experience justifies the limited time

Tell Triplore the actual arrival and departure windows when generating the itinerary. If Sunday entry feels rushed, request a lighter version before buying tickets. Our weekend itinerary guide explains how travel hours change the plan even when the booking says “two nights”.

Decide whether San Sebastián deserves a separate trip

With two full days, our recommendation is to stay in Bilbao. Adding another city removes time from the museum, old town or meals already discussed. Friends who mainly want San Sebastián should make that preference explicit before accepting a Bilbao-centred itinerary.

Compare the choices in Triplore: keep the original two-day Bilbao version, then request a revision replacing one day with San Sebastián. Check current transport options with the operator and compare the remaining time in each place. Read both versions before deciding. A San Sebastián outing earns its place when everyone prefers it to the Bilbao experiences they would lose.

If everyone prefers the outing, accept the shorter Bilbao visit deliberately. Otherwise, keep the two-day plan and use San Sebastián as the starting point for the next trip. The guide to sharing an itinerary with friends shows how to keep that decision attached to the plan rather than reopening it in separate chats.

Generate the Bilbao weekend before buying admission

Start with Bilbao, your companions and the usable dates. Add the budget and preferred pace, making the Guggenheim a must-do only if the group actually wants to enter. Triplore generates the complete first itinerary within 5 minutes; invite friends to comment on the museum day and the food plans.

Use chat edits to settle the remaining disagreement, then check the official museum calendar and purchase through the venue's own booking route. You will have a shared weekend to follow, with the expensive or time-sensitive choices agreed before anyone pays.
